By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Analyze the cultural work of kpop specifically and popular media culture overall
- Explore your own engagement with media culture, including kpop and beyond
- Practice contemporary rhetorical modes with digital media tools
- Integrate self-reflection with academic inquiry
- Examine the cultural and social dynamics at play within Kpop fandom and the experiences of individual fans and fan communities/subcultures
- Analyze the multiple intersecting factors that shape the image and reception of Kpop and its artists, groups, and fans
- Evaluate the impact of Kpop cultures on popular media culture more broadly
As a First Year Seminar, we also are guided by the FYSE learning goals, which are as follows:
- To learn what is expected intellectually and ethically for college-level work in the liberal arts;
- To engage seriously with the topic to which one’s seminar is devoted;
- To develop skills in widely accessible yet scholarly presentation (written and oral), involving observation, analysis, argumentation, research, and the use of sources;
- To become (with the help of advising) active in exploring academic and professional interests, and to find rewarding ways to participate in intellectual life in the liberal arts.
