Every week, we’ll have a discussion on Canvas where you will share the key ideas you drew out of the readings, or questions the readings left with you, & share your thoughts on the screening: moments that struck you, that you particularly liked, or that perhaps made you uncomfortable or feeling disconnected? Whenever possible, connect the ideas from the readings to the screenings/consider the screening in light of the readings or our class discussion. You can start your own thread or engage with a thread that's already going. Sometimes I will post a few prompts to get you started, but you’re welcome to take the conversation in other directions.
Post twice a week, once by Thursday and once by Sunday. (If you want, you could focus on the readings for the first post and the screening for the second.) Feel free to embed images, video, links, etc. No need to be overly formal in these conversations. Each post should average around 300 words (or more). Any extra responses beyond those first two count as extra credit! Feel free to embed images, video, links, etc. No need to be overly formal in these conversations.
Below I’ve included a rubric (drawing on Bloom’s Taxonomy) to give you a sense of how I assess this assignment. I’ll also ask you to self-assess periodically and I’ll take that into account, and I’ll also consider growth as you get used to this assignment.
These posts demonstrate exceptional critical thinking and insight. You engage thoughtfully with the material, developing original perspectives and drawing meaningful connections between readings and screenings. Your contributions consistently exceed 300 words, meet deadlines, and advance class discussions through substantive engagement with peers. Arguments are well-supported with specific examples, often enhanced by relevant multimedia elements.
Your posts demonstrate good comprehension and analysis of course materials, making clear connections between readings and screenings. You meet length requirements and deadlines consistently, and engage productively with classmates. While your ideas are clearly expressed, there may be room for deeper analysis or more original perspectives.
Posts demonstrate basic understanding but tend toward summary rather than analysis. While you show comprehension of materials, deeper connections between readings and screenings could be developed further. Posts occasionally fall short of length requirements or deadlines, and peer engagement, while present, could be more substantive.
Posts remain at a surface level of engagement with course materials. There are challenges with meeting basic requirements for length and timing, and connections between course materials are limited. Participation in peer discussions needs development. Additional support and revision strategies can help strengthen these contributions.
