Stage 1
As a writer:
- read aloud a paragraph to bring your “voice” into the circle.
As a reader:
- take notes to share with the writer
- tell the writer what is important, interesting, moving, thought, provoking, insightful or surprising about the piece
- articulate your experience as readers, with emphasis on the positive
- please use “I” statements: “I learned or felt x when I was reading...or
- “I found myself thinking y about your idea of...”
Stage 2
As a writer:
- take notes on feedback you receive
- asks questions of readers (example: “what did you think about section x? Did I have too much/not enough discussion or description of y?”)
As readers
- please be honest in your answers, including criticism, but be kind and specific in your criticism of course
- ask productive (rather than prescriptive) questions.
- Don’t: “why did you not provide an example of this?” or “did you notice your prose is choppy here?”
- Do: “can you give us an example of this?” or “can you talk about your writing style/rhythm?”
- Don’t: “you need to imagine/include more points of view”
- Do: “can you describe some other views on this?”

👉 Notes on logistics:
- We will break into groups of three, and we’ll have roughly 10 minutes per text
- Be mindful of pacing so that you have time for each text, and so that the amount of time allotted to each writer is roughly equivalent
- To that end, consider setting a timer on a phone
